View an Eclipse
June 20-21, 2001
Von Braun Astronomical Society Planetarium
Fernbank Science Center
|
This Project is No Longer Funded, the website is here for archival purposes.
|
Goals and Objectives for this adventure:
- to reduce fear of science and astronomy among the Girls Scouts and to
inspire a life-long interest in science and astronomy.
- to excite the girls about solar research,
- to involve the Girls Scouts in the methods of science, and
- to exchange cultural ideas (about astronomy).
Eclipses and the Sun pin requirements:
- Begin by filling out a PRE-TEST containing questions about the Sun and
eclipses. Discuss with your leader what else you would like to
earn. You and your Leader may email questions to
mitzi.adams@msfc.nasa.gov to be compiled into a Frequently Asked
Questions list. This list will be posted on
http://magaxp1.msfc.nasa.gov/outreach/girlscouts/.
-
Draw a schematic diagram of a solar eclipse.
-
Draw a schematic diagram of a lunar eclipse.
-
Observe an eclipse either in person or by webcast. (This could be a
partial or total solar eclipse or a partial or total lunar
eclipse.)
Requirements 5 - 7 will require the girls to observe the Moon, the Sun, and
to investigate solar flares over a given period of time. Again, sign off on the
requirements as your Girl Scouts complete them.
- Observe and log Moon phases through one cycle using the
LUNAR OBSERVATIONS CHART
.
-
Use the following link to track sunspots over a period of several days (one half of a rotation).
TRACKING SUNSPOTS
- Using the template at the following link, keep a diary of solar flares
for at least two weeks and note whether they produce a geomagnetic
storm.
SOLAR FLARE DIARY
- When you finish all other requirements, fill out the post activity
questionnaire. This questionnaire can be found
on the back of the
Eclipses and the Sun pin requirements sheet
(If your scout
attended a special planetarium about eclipses held on June
20th, 2001), OR
by following the
POST TEST
link.
When completed, make sure that all activities have been signed off and mail
your Girl Scouts' pin requirement sheets to:
